Simplified Sunday: Bookcase Styling

If walls could talk…a well-styled bookcase tells the most interesting story.

Everyone wants a curated built-in that tells their story but where to begin? Our design team is sharing some of their pro-styling tips to achieve this look!

Start with large items in the back

Think artwork or awards, trays or baskets. This creates a basic foundation for sprinkling in smaller, decorative objects later in front. Play with the full depth of your shelves!

Each shelf should be a mix of small and larger scale keepsakes.

Purchase several of your favorite pieces and carefully repeat for balance and symmetry.

Mix it up

Display books multiple ways: stack horizontally and stand some up. Try mixing horizontal and vertical picture frames as well.

Odd numbers are a must!

Think 5 books in a stack, 3 canisters grouped together, or 1 statement vase.

Add some personality

Incorporating “old” or existing pieces with new accessories – antiques or personal items that have a story or are collected from travels always adds your family’s unique touch to your shelves.

Different textures are fun too – rustic wood, metals, feathers … things that drape (large glass beads)… small framed artwork.

And remember: sometimes LESS IS MORE. Stand back and admire your masterpiece!
