Inspiration in the Studio

State of the Art :: Home Design & Decor Magazine Feature

Hot off the press! We are so excited to finally share a look into our Pattern Play project as seen in Home Design & Decor Magazine. After initially wrapping up this project the week before quarantine and carefully styling a socially-distanced photoshoot back in August, we’ve had this imagery under wraps, anxiously waiting for the big reveal.

What inspires you? When it came to renovating this West Raleigh home. originally built back in 2005, our team had the unique opportunity to draw inspiration from the homeowner’s extensive original art collection.

However, we did not use the art as a constraint, simply rather as a building block for colors, textures, and patterns throughout the home.

No detail was left untouched! We did things the Southern Studio way by selecting a bold trim for the sofa.

Our team (and our clients) find value in investing in fine art. Artwork has the ability to tell a story and when selected properly, it may be moved seamlessly from home-to-home and even from space-to-space. These particular homeowners proved to have an extensive collection of art from their previous home but did not have furniture selections that were as elevated as the art.

What’s not to love about this corner? Even our furry friend approves, perched atop custom ottomans in high performing fabrics.

Missed our initial Project Reveal? We’d love to hear your thoughts on this project and on starting a personal art collection in the comments below!

Project Reveal :: Pattern Play

In the most 2020 fashion, our design team completed an install for a fun family just in the nick of time before the impending COVID-19 stay-at-home orders took effect this spring.  We can’t think of a better way to quarantine than in a newly renovated home with a playful color palette!

Our design team had so much fun working on this project with patterned window treatments, textured wallcovering, and a gorgeous collection of original art. The dining room is casual, yet sophisticated and just perfect for almost any occasion.

The Windy O’Connor wallpaper in this powder bath carried the home’s artistic theme into their daily hand washing routine.

The brushed gold architectural light fixture makes a statement above the breakfast table and adds drama to the ceiling height and stained beams.

A flood of natural light is the best accessory to spotlight the textures and patterns in this inviting family room! Gold raffia wallpaper backs the bookcases flanking the remodeled fireplace.

We combined existing furniture elements with new luxury textiles to take the owner’s retreat to the next level.  This space proves that layering the old with the new can bring new life to any home.

Original artwork, a hide rug and whimsical window treatment fabric make the piano room one of our favorites!

The best part of our job is when we receive thoughtful notes from clients who appreciate their homes.  This one was extra-special since it was installed the very day our state shut down for the pandemic and instantly received lots of love and breaking in!

We're Honored :: HGTV 2020 Designer of the Year Awards

We have exciting news to share! Remember our Charlotte Charm project recently completed with New Old Custom Homes?  Well, the project was nominated as a finalist for the Color + Pattern category in HGTV’s 2020 Designer of the Year Awards! We love the use of color and pattern throughout this home and we hope you do too!

The voting for the awards is open to the public from now until September 29th and can be found here: hgtv.com/designeroftheyear!  There are some beautiful homes entered, so be sure to check them out (and, we would welcome your supporting vote, too)!

Here are some of our favorite photos from Charlotte Charm. The open living room combines the warmth of rustic wood with bright, lush velvet.

The dining room window treatments become a beautiful backdrop of luxurious pattern for the casual table setting.

The bold wallcovering pattern makes a big impact in the small powder room.

We especially love the great drama and display of feathers found in the guest bath wallcovering.

To see the entire home, visit HGTV.com and be sure to vote (yes, you can vote every day)!  We are incredibly grateful for clients who trust our vision and allow us the creative freedom to bring their homes to life!

Project Reveal Part 1: Timeless Beauty!

It never gets old.  Witnessing the joy of a client moving in to a new home that looks and lives just as they dreamed is what we live for here at Southern Studio!  And collaborating with Rufty Homes to construct and design this traditional, but light and bright, showstopper has been a dream project from beginning to beautiful end. We’ve named this home our Timeless Beauty project.

Those gorgeous curved double front doors practically beg family and friends to enter and to stay awhile!

Soaring ceilings with gorgeous wood beam details are stunningly dramatic, but plenty of comfortable seating in a classic and soothing color palette keeps this great room snug and restful.

The custom sliding doors open the indoors to the outdoors in the most beautiful way.

The large center island anchors the kitchen. The mix of creamy white painted and stained cherry cabinets brings a fresh twist on traditional design.

The dining room combines an extensive collection of family heirlooms layered with beautiful new textiles and lighting.

Great clients and a fabulous builder – well, that’s when the magic happens.   We loved bringing this project to life for beautiful clients!
